# Week 7: Synthesis, Technosymbiosis, and History

## Overview

The final week returns to **synthesis**, now informed by experience, recognition, attention, consciousness, alignment, and critique. **Technosymbiosis** names the possibility that humans and technical systems develop through sustained interdependence. It does not guarantee harmony: symbiotic relations can remain unequal, extractive, or unstable.

The historical question is whether AI should be understood as a tool within existing institutions, a new stage of those institutions, or part of a deeper transformation in human learning and social life. Hegelian synthesis asks us to preserve what the course has learned from its contradictions rather than resolve them with either technological optimism or refusal.

By the end of the week, you should be able to connect the seven course concepts, formulate a defensible account of human-machine co-learning, and propose a future learning practice that remains open to critique.

## How does synthesis relate to machine learning?

Machine learning develops inside a larger system of data, human judgment, labor, infrastructure, institutions, and use. A final synthesis therefore cannot be a claim about model capability alone. It must explain how these relations produce one another and how contradictions—such as assistance versus dependency or personalization versus control—might drive change.

## How does synthesis relate to human learning?

Human learning becomes synthetic when earlier concepts are reorganized into a more adequate whole without losing their important differences. The learner should now be able to see experience, recognition, attention, consciousness, alignment, and critique as connected dimensions of a shared learning situation rather than isolated topics.

## In session: from charter to report

**There is no self-assessment this week.** The five formative cycles closed with
Critique in Week 6. This session is given over to the final synthesis report,
and the work below feeds directly into it rather than being marked on its own.

### 1. Build the charter (in class)

Work through a machine-human chat, starting from:

> Help me synthesize a theory of human-machine learning from seven concepts: synthesis, experience, recognition, attention, consciousness, alignment, and critique. Ask me to define the relation between two concepts at a time. Challenge any link that erases a difference between human and machine. Then help me draft principles for a learning relationship that is useful, reciprocal where possible, evidence-aware, and open to revision.

Continue until every concept has been connected to at least two others. Produce a
one-page **charter for critical technosymbiosis** containing:

- a concept map connecting all seven concepts;
- three principles for human-machine co-learning;
- one unresolved contradiction the charter does not pretend to solve;
- one institutional condition required for the charter to work;
- one empirical claim that would need testing; and
- one practice for continuing critique after the course.

The charter is not the report. It is scaffolding — the shortest statement of what
you now think, which the report then argues for at length.

### 2. Settle the shape of your report

The final report is due **Friday 16 October, 11:59 PM Central**, four days after
this seminar. By the end of tonight you should leave with:

- **A form.** A report, an essay, or a curriculum design — whichever fits the
  argument you have actually been making across the five cycles. We settle this
  together; the form should follow the argument, not the other way round.
- **A thesis.** One sentence you are prepared to defend, which your five
  self-assessments have been circling without quite stating.
- **A spine.** Which concepts do real work in your argument, and in what order.
  You do not need all eight. You need the ones your thesis depends on.
- **The raw material identified.** Which passages of your own Google Doc —
  baseline response, five revisions, reflective notes, peer and instructor
  commentary — you will draw on. The record of your changes *is* the evidence.

### 3. Workshop

In rotated groups, present your thesis in two minutes and take challenges. You
are looking for the objection you cannot yet answer — better to meet it tonight
than to discover it while writing on Thursday.

### 4. Reflect

Carry these into the report rather than submitting them separately:

- Which concept most changed your account of learning?
- Where did the machine strengthen the synthesis, and where did it flatten a real difference?
- How has your own use of the machine changed since Week 1?
- What future evidence could force you to rewrite the charter?

### What the report is assessed on

The final report carries 30%. It is the only piece I grade rather than you, and
it is assessed on the quality of the thinking, not its agreement with mine:

If you need an extension, ask **before** 16 October. Term A grades are due to the
University at 2:00 PM on Friday 23 October, so there is very little room after
the deadline.
